A private-label cosmetics manufacturer based in Wagga Wagga, NSW, approached us after experiencing a steady rise in customer complaints related to skin irritation and dryness from their best-selling hand soap. The product had been on the market for years and was originally promoted as “mild” and “suitable for sensitive skin.” However, the formulation relied on a traditional blend of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Cocamide DEA, which raised red flags due to increasing regulatory scrutiny and known risks of allergenic impurities and dermal sensitivity.

Labsure was brought in to evaluate the formulation scientifically and help align it with modern consumer expectations and regulatory requirements.

Our work proceeded through four main stages:

1. Irritation Risk Assessment & Benchmarking
   We conducted HET-CAM and in-vitro epidermal tolerance tests to assess irritation potential. The client’s soap ranked poorly when compared to four similar pharmacy brands. This provided a scientific basis for reformulation and marketing claims.

2. Surfactant System Overhaul
   We designed a sulfate-free and DEA-free alternative using Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Decyl Glucoside, and plant-derived mild foaming agents. This blend delivered cleansing power while significantly reducing irritation scores.

3. Green Chemistry & Label Improvement
   Our ingredient choices complied with COSMOS and ECOCERT standards. We also eliminated synthetic dyes and unnecessary fragrance allergens, positioning the product as “clean label” and “biodegradable”.

4. Stability Testing & Packaging Review
   Reformulated soap was subjected to accelerated aging tests, especially to ensure clarity and stability in transparent bottles, even when combined with essential oils.

Within 8 weeks, the client had a reformulated product ready for pilot launch — one that was mild, modern, compliant, and market-ready.
